Tell Me A Little Something About Yourself

.

Oh that sassy peach-of-a- woman Sarah, of The Delicious Life, she is always inspiring me (and yet, also always turning down my tantalizing luncheon entreaties…) while flaunting her fabulousness. For instance, just this past week she dared to go where I have not. To that one place that almost seems forbidden to a nice web-logging girl like me. Yes kiddies, she went ahead and asked her readers to tell her…about themselves! Gasp! The scandal!

Well, truth be told, I am constantly amazed that someone in Singapore gives a hoot what it is I am doing and why, but believe me whey I say, I’m all for it. I mean, it’s weird enough that my darling Ms. McGee and her paramour PK The-Writer-We-All-Love (and when I say “we,” I’m including you too. You love him. Trust me. You do.) read this silly frivoliity on a regular basis; but perfect, (perfectly darling!) virtual strangers? Well now, that’s just…flattering actually. Very, very flattering. Blush worthy indeed. And a hearty thank you to you all. All six of you. Eight? Eighty-eight?

Well, I guess we shall see, since I too am going to bravely and brazenly (because my dears, I am a brazen woman) lure you to come in a little closer and whisper sweet nothings into my ear. Because I want to know…everything. But, let's just start with the basics, shall we? So please, take a second to tell me a wee little bit bout your fine self. I wants to know…besides, you know so much about me, it’s only fair. So do tell…

1. Where do you reside?
2. What on earth do you DO?
3. How did you find your way here?
4. Any other blogs you recommend?
5. Only one dessert is on your plate for the rest of time...what's it gonna be?
6. Food wise: New York, Vancouver, Paris, San Francisco, Melbourne, Buenos Aires, Singapore or Calcutta?
7. We are having lunch...what's on the menu?
8. It's hot out, are your windows open or is the AC on?
9. Giada DeLaurentiis...talented (and beautiful) or Hollywood nepotism in action?
10. The waitress wants to know: Do you want the fries, salad or fresh fruit with that?

Thank you all, in advance, for indulging me. I really can't wait to hear your answers! Should be good fun...

Air kisses,
Rachael

Red Lobster Restaurant posted weaker June sales than a year ago. The Darden Restaurants chain had been in the midst of an impressive two-year turnaround, but same-restaurant sales dipped about 5 percent in June, Darden said Monday. Darden's other flagship chain, Olive Garden, fared better, reporting a 3 percent to 4 percent increase. The Orlando, Florida-based company does not report monthly same-restaurant sales for Smokey Bones, Bahama Breeze and Seasons 52. – The Orlando Sentinel

Alan R. Hirsch, MD, FACP, neurological director of the Smell and Taste Treatment and Research Foundation in Chicago, conducted two studies that measured men and women's reaction to different smells. The results: Men appeared to be turned on most by a combination of smelling lavender and pumpkin pie, and women by Good and Plenty candy and cucumber.

GOOD & PLENTY candy was first produced by the Quaker City Confectionery Company in Philadelphia in 1893 and is the oldest branded candy in the United States. – Hersheys.com

Comments:
As I've never posted here..what an interesting first comment I'm gonna leave:

1. Boston, MA (yes I live in Boston proper...not like 30 miles out)

2. Too nerdy to talk about, but I do love my photography on the side

3. You left a comment on my blog and HEREEEEE'S JEFF!

4. Shameless plug for my photo blog (www.wheresmymind.com) also http://cafecyan.blogspot.com/ a "Wicked" (Bostonian) cute couple

5. Fort Knox Pie

6. New York

7. Well..if this is a first 'food date' then probably something pretty so we could chat about it :D However, taste does come first!

8. AC...being on the third floor of a condo with old people below us...we ROAST if we don't

9. She has good recipes, but I'm not sold she did it totally on her own...she might be the Tori Spelling of the foodnetwork

10. Depends....fruit is a desert, unless it is in the salad, then it's ok...Fries always rock, but sometimes the main dish is so bad that a salad is needed to save any nutrition! lol

Hope this was at least interesting...was for me :)

1. Currently Amsterdam, normally, Oregon
2. Not much
3. You!
4. Mine! http://leiha.blogspot.com/
5. ice cream
6. I don't know, I love it all
7. If I'm cooking, a salad, if you're cooking, the world!
8. AC baby!
9. too lazy to check the link, LOL
10. depends on what I'm eating. I love fresh fruit but it would probably be the salad or fries

1. Where do you reside? Los Angeles

2. What on earth do you DO? Currently international recruiting for an accounting firm, but am in school for construction management.

3. How did you find your way here? Through a class you taught.

4. Any other blogs you recommend? www.deliciousdays.com

5. Only one dessert is on your plate for the rest of time...what's it gonna be? Any overly-rich decadent chocolate cake.

6. Food wise: New York, Vancouver, Paris, San Francisco, Melbourne, Buenos Aires, Singapore or Calcutta? Vancouver - Bin 941 was my first and best tapas (and Sangria!) experience. Their pommes frites with a maple glaze, and their ostrich medalions are to-die-for. If you're ever in the area, you must try it.

7. We are having lunch...what's on the menu? Some sort of salad with either toasted walnuts or pinenuts. Or an Indian buffet if it's a REALLY good day.

8. It's hot out, are your windows open or is the AC on? Both. (I know, I know)

9. Giada DeLaurentiis...talented (and beautiful) or Hollywood nepotism in action? Getting more talented each season. Her first year's episodes are pretty painful.

10. The waitress wants to know: Do you want the fries, salad or fresh fruit with that? While secretly wanting fries, I order salad knowing that I won't like it and most likely won't eat it.

How fun!

1. Where do you reside? Knoxville, TN

2. What on earth do you DO? What don't I do? I write restaurant reviews and food articles, and I do freelance television production and post-production work.

3. How did you find your way here? I believe you commented on my blog, but I can't for the life of me remember.

4. Any other blogs you recommend? I love those kids at www.whatwereeating.com.

5. Only one dessert is on your plate for the rest of time...what's it gonna be? Oh god, I am frozen with indecision. Creme brulee?

6. Food wise: New York, Vancouver, Paris, San Francisco, Melbourne, Buenos Aires, Singapore or Calcutta? Paris!

7. We are having lunch...what's on the menu? Mango margaritas, chickpea and walnut empanadas, and salads from my favorite local joint.

8. It's hot out, are your windows open or is the AC on? Only a few of our windows open (old house, painted shut), and it's hot here, so the AC. However, we only run it at night, huge trees and a slate roof keep us cool.

9. Giada DeLaurentiis...talented (and beautiful) or Hollywood nepotism in action? Her recipes are good (and they almost always work, unlike Nigella Lawsons), but I don't know much else about her. She has a decent enough TV personality, but she needs to eat more of her food.

10. The waitress wants to know: Do you want the fries, salad or fresh fruit with that? It depends on what I've ordered! Most always, the fries or the salad--fruit is too often mooshy and disappointing.

1. Where do you reside?
Ft. Worth, Texas

2. What on earth do you DO?
I am a bookkeeper for a roofing company.

3. How did you find your way here?
I am obsessed with food and all things realted to food. I like reading about it, cooking it, eating it, throwing it.

4. Any other blogs you recommend?
s'kat and the food

5. Only one dessert is on your plate for the rest of time...what's it gonna be?
flan

6. Food wise: New York, Vancouver, Paris, San Francisco, Melbourne, Buenos Aires, Singapore or Calcutta?
New York

7. We are having lunch...what's on the menu?
If we are going out then Sushi or Pho, staying in I will cook a feast of appetizers.

8. It's hot out, are your windows open or is the AC on?
In Texas, the AC is on all summer.

9. Giada DeLaurentiis...talented (and beautiful) or Hollywood nepotism in action?
Her speech patterns annoy me.

10. The waitress wants to know: Do you want the fries, salad or fresh fruit with that?
Salad, please

1. Where do you reside?

Los Angeles

2. What on earth do you DO?

Attorney/Daydreamer

3. How did you find your way here?

I can't exactly remember, but I am pretty sure it was off of a link from another blog, to L.A. foodbloggers.

4. Any other blogs you recommend?

Well, The Delicious Life, of course, and mine: Gastronomy 101, and if you want to read about being a lawyer: Lack of Scienter

5. Only one dessert is on your plate for the rest of time...what's it gonna be?

Oh dear. Sorbet ... in seasonal flavors? Is that cheating?

6. Food wise: New York, Vancouver, Paris, San Francisco, Melbourne, Buenos Aires, Singapore or Calcutta?

I have to say San Francisco, only because I have actually lived there, so I know a lot more about the food there than any of the other cities.

7. We are having lunch...what's on the menu?

My favorite lunch: sandwiches. But gourmet ones for you. And maybe a ginger lemonade, or it it's THAT kind of lunch, mojitos.

8. It's hot out, are your windows open or is the AC on?

I don't have AC, so all the windows are open and I am sitting directly in front of the fan.

9. Giada DeLaurentiis...talented (and beautiful) or Hollywood nepotism in action?

I don't know ... I have never actually seen her show. She's very pretty, though.

10. The waitress wants to know: Do you want the fries, salad or fresh fruit with that?

Fries. I can't help it.

1. Where do you reside?
Baltimore, MD
2. What on earth do you DO?
full-time student, intern at a global management consulting firm
3. How did you find your way here?
I google'd "$40 a day Rachael Ray" because I wanted to see if you'd done anything in Virginia Beach since I'm going there this weekend.
4. Any other blogs you recommend?
I'm sure you know tons of food-related blogs; so two entertaining & thought-provoking blogs that I enjoy are: PostSecret and Japanese School Teacher Editorials.
5. Only one dessert is on your plate for the rest of time...what's it gonna be?
I would have to say either a Hawaiin pineapple upside-down cake, tiramisu, or two of my fav Filipino desserts: Halo-Halo ("mix-mix" Guinatang Halo-Halo includes coconut) or Palitaw.
6. Food wise: New York, Vancouver, Paris, San Francisco, Melbourne, Buenos Aires, Singapore or Calcutta?
I love all food. But I must say Filipino food. I'm sure I'm biased, but Filipino food is just amazing: it includes "high-end" dishes such as lechon, comfort food like sinigang, munchies like lumpia, and amazing desserts (see above.)
7. We are having lunch...what's on the menu?
I like to keep lunch filling, but light because I go all out for dinner. So I would have to say something cold like a side Ceaser salad or a chilled Tuscan Turkey wrap, with a bowl of fresh soup, let's say broccoli and cheese. Let's also have a fresh fruit smoothie as a good, healthy beverage and dessert in one!
8. It's hot out, are your windows open or is the AC on?
In Maryland, there's rarely a breeze and it's usually humid, so I'd have the AC on. But I love Texas, so if I'm down there, I'd have the windows open... or I'd just be out on the hammock!
9. Giada DeLaurentiis...talented (and beautiful) or Hollywood nepotism in action?
I've only seen her show a couple times and I do think she is pretty & talented. Honestly though I like to keep things simple but have amazing outcomes, so I'm a loyal 30-Minute Meal girl haha
10. The waitress wants to know: Do you want the fries, salad or fresh fruit with that?
If the fruit includes strawberries and/or mangoes, then I choose that; otherwise it'd be a toss up between the salad (no pun intended) and the fries! I could really eat anything.

Each, in its own way, was unforgettable. It would be difficult to...Paris! By all means, Paris!
7. We are having lunch...what's on the menu?
Baked Pear & Brie

8. It's hot out, are your windows open or is the AC on?
My building is from 1924 and Chaplin was too cheap to put in AC.
9. Giada DeLaurentiis...talented (and beautiful) or Hollywood nepotism in action?
She's fabulous, darling. Kristen Chenoweth is playing her in the movie.

4. Any other blogs you recommend?

5. Only one dessert is on your plate for the rest of time...what's it gonna be?
Hopefully a sharp knife so I can end my misery.

6. Food wise: New York, Vancouver, Paris, San Francisco, Melbourne, Buenos Aires, Singapore or Calcutta?
Right this minute, food cart hopping in New York sounds satisfying.

7. We are having lunch...what's on the menu?
Grilled chicken with orange/rosemary sauce over fresh greens, sweet potato fries (with salt),iced tea, pears poached in chocolate merlot sauce (I'm hungry)

8. It's hot out, are your windows open or is the AC on?
All doors and windows are open since our house is up high and the breeze is always pleasureable. I think we used the A/C one time last year.

9. Giada DeLaurentiis...talented (and beautiful) or Hollywood nepotism in action?

10. The waitress wants to know: Do you want the fries, salad or fresh fruit with that?

1. Where do you reside?

2. What on earth do you DO?
Engineering and project management in the field of air pollution control.

3. How did you find your way here?
I don't remember, possibly through The Delicious Life, Becks & Posh, or Slashfood.

4. Any other blogs you recommend?
Beside mine (Mental Masala), some that aren't on your list already are Eating Asia, Real Thai, Gristmill (about environmental issues, not grinding grain, but food is a frequent topic), The Ethicurean, Eat Local Challenge, Michael Pollan at the NY Times (available for free on his website a few days after he posts), Eggbeater, One Hot Stove.

5. Only one dessert is on your plate for the rest of time...what's it gonna be?
Nectarine-blueberry cobbler with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

6. Food wise: New York, Vancouver, Paris, San Francisco, Melbourne, Buenos Aires, Singapore or Calcutta?
It's a tough choice, especially since I haven't been to 4 of the locations, but I'd have to say San Francisco or Singapore. I like the informality and multicultural flavor of both places. But I wish that S.F. had something like the Maxwell Road Food Centre (a foodie's food court).

7. We are having lunch...what's on the menu?
This time of year: good bread, interesting cheese, fresh tomatoes, some vegetables, seasonal fruit, something with chocolate.

8. It's hot out, are your windows open or is the AC on?
Windows open, up to about 95 F and high humidity. In Berkeley, we never need AC.

9. Giada DeLaurentiis...talented (and beautiful) or Hollywood nepotism in action?
Connections more important than talent in Hollywood? Impossible.

10. The waitress wants to know: Do you want the fries, salad or fresh fruit with that?
Fries, unless the salad is something extraordinary. I love salted potatoes of all kinds (I have used your method for oven-roasted potatoes several times with great success), and since my diet at home is quite healthy and excludes deep fried foods, so I'd go for the fries.

For money: Write ad copy.

3. How did you find your way here?
The random serendipity of the [NEXT BLOG>>] button.

4. Any other blogs you recommend?
Pardon the shameless plug, but my blog roll answers this pretty well. (And they’re already linked for your blog-surfing convenience.)

Two other food blogs I like are BLOGHUNGRY and The Amateur Gormet.

5. Only one dessert is on your plate for the rest of time...what's it gonna be?
Probably (or, ‘prolly,’ as the kids say) coffee ice cream with dark-chocolate chunks. Starbucks Java Chip or Ben & Jerry’s Coffee Coffee Buzz Buzz Buzz.

Now if you’d said ‘glass’ instead of ‘plate,’ the answer would be Château d’Yquem.

6. Food wise: New York, Vancouver, Paris, San Francisco, Melbourne, Buenos Aires, Singapore or Calcutta?

Florence. No, Venice. No, Florence. Yeah, definitely Florence.

7. We are having lunch...what's on the menu?

If I’m cooking:
Thyme-crusted king salmon with wild blackberry gastric,
Tomato and mint tabbouleh.
Grilled zucchini
A nice Oregon Pinot Gris.

If I’m buying:
Pulled pork sandwiches (with cole slaw and hush puppies, natch) from Danny’s Barbeque.
Anchor Liberty Ale

8. It's hot out, are your windows open or is the AC on?
Hot? At this point, ‘hot’ would be downright refreshing. It’s miserable. AC and closed windows for sure in the house; AC and open windows in the car.

9. Giada DeLaurentiis...talented (and beautiful) or Hollywood nepotism in action?
Not a fan. I love, love, love Italian food, but I just don’t get her take on it. Also, something about her just bugs me. I think it’s her head. It’s like an olive on a toothpick.

Now Ina Garten, that’s what I call talent, beauty, and an infectious passion for food and hospitality—all wrapped up in true hostess. Giada’s not even in the same league.

10. The waitress wants to know: Do you want the fries, salad or fresh fruit with that? Fries. Do you have those waffle-cut ones? Those rule. Would it be pretentious of me to ask for some aïoli for dipping?

10 - Depends on what I'm having with it...either fruit or salad.

blog recommendations: read everything you see! lately, i like this fish, which isn't about food.

lunch: a very good salad

windows or a/c: you're kidding right? a/c!!! thank god for central air...

giada: okay, she is not UGLY, and certainly has a beautifully curvaceous body, BUT something about her proportions are wildly off. she looks like a tootsie pop, and when she smiles, it looks like a forced grimace, which is pretty creepy.

fries, salad or fruit: clearly, the choice here SHOULD be salad, since blogging has made me gain a wee bit of weight, BUT i am assuming this is a side to a burger and who the hell eats a side salad with a burger?!?!? (unless it's potato salad)

1. Where do you reside?

Currently in sunny, rainy, and bipolar Northern Ohio (where we have an accent with all the nasality of brooklyn/boston). Previously I have resided in Vancouver, Spain, and hopefully soon to be either montreal or san francisco...and I am only 20 =D

2. What on earth do you DO?

Jobless at the moment, I have been a coffee shop barista, and hope to someday get my DANG BLOG to work, and eventually startup my own cafe. Been working towards that very slowly.

3. How did you find your way here?

The delicious life or Gluten Girl, not quite sure, but It's a good idea ( I need to make your recipes one of these days.

4. Any other blogs you recommend?

Bunnyfoot - Wierd food with a cute and sweet writing style. (http://www.bunnyfoot.blogspot.com/)

Everybody Likes Sandwiches - I've actually tried her recipes, and since I've lived in her area (and she has a sweet looking blog) I respect her more.

The Canadian Baker - Good. She really knows a lot, she's canadian, sweet, and you have a very realistic idea of how the food will come out. (http://canadianbaker.blogspot.com/)

and...Bunny Pie (http://tart.hellogirlfriend.com/) which I think Bunny Pie is made out of tofu and mungbeans...but YAY TOFU!

5. Only one dessert is on your plate for the rest of time...what's it gonna be?

Pumpkin Cheesecake. Sorry I'm a fall bub, and this intoxicating combination of spice and creme makes me melt with glee.

6. Food wise: New York, Vancouver, Paris, San Francisco, Melbourne, Buenos Aires, Singapore or Calcutta?

Vancouver. Britania Sushi, 4.95 Terayaki Platter with Tempura Yam Roll. Sorry the asian food of this place made me home. I also grew fond of Addis for their great warm ethiopian atmosphere. (Tesva and Frai ran it, a gorgeously kind ethiopian couple who would give us free and delectable ethiopian drinks) Continental Coffee, for good Cinnamon rolls and THE BEST Carmel Soy Latte in Exsistence, but only if the owner makes it. Ask for Nick. He also was very willing to talk about his business, so if you want to hear some cool history ask about them when he's there (which is most of the time)

I didn't like New York, but I was twelve then, maybe again someday I shall return. I <3 the Singapore Markets though.

7. We are having lunch...what's on the menu?

Oh, man am I lazy. I love eggs any time a day, so probably a Spinach Egg tart with sundried tomatos and slivers of canadian bacon broiled to golden beauty. Some sort of very hearty whole wheat toast, and smoothies. Probably Banana and Blueberry.

8. It's hot out, are your windows open or is the AC on?

I have lived entire years without air or a/c. currently I am spoiled, and sometimes frigid. (<---now has ac)

9. Giada DeLaurentiis...talented (and beautiful) or Hollywood nepotism in action?

I want to make her Limoncello Cheesecake squares! Although I strongly doubt she eats a good portion of what she makes or she has a hidden ponch under all those poofy shirts.

10. The waitress wants to know: Do you want the fries, salad or fresh fruit with that?

Fries, only if they are sweet potato or fresh-cut with skins and malt vinegar. Usually Salad then, unless it's crappy ice burg, then Fruit if it ACTUALLY is fresh. I always get some sort of grape and melon medley, and I don't like cantelope dangit.

Rachael,

I am so happy you were in San Diego. It means we were breathing the same air and thats probablywhy I came up with a brilliant recipe to share with you.

In India, salad is very simple. They dont get into lettuce for some reason. But what makes it so delicious is the "black" salt they use in the salad. Black salt is actually Pink salt. It smells like sulfur, but the taste makes any cucumber or sweet onion or tomato taste like heaven.

So thats the salad. Take 1/2 a bunch of cilantro leaves, washed and mix with 1/2 a sweet onion thats chopped, 1 small red sweet tomato, 1 yellow tomato and 1 ornage tomato, 2 perfectly ripe but still firm enough to cut into cubes avocado and 2 peeled persian cucumbers. Mix all together and toss with the joice of 1 lemon and a teaspoon of this mysterious and wonderful black salt and a but if black pepper. If you do not fall in love with this salad, I owe you dinner. I made it last night and my family could not get over how dleicious it was.

Enjoy.

Sunana
